Tylenol for an Infant
Tylenol is the brand name for acetaminophen, which is a pain reliever and fever reducer manufactured in adult and infant strength. Although it is available without a prescription, it is best to check with a pediatrician before giving any medication to an infant.-
Dosage
-
Tylenol for infants is administered in liquid form through the use of a dropper. It is squeezed slowly into the baby's mouth toward the back of the cheek. For children older than 2, a weight chart is available for dosing purposes. However, for infants younger than 2, a pediatrician must be consulted to determine the appropriate dose.
Benefits
-
According to the official Tylenol website, when used according to the directions, products such as Infants' Concentrated Tylenol Drops are safe, effective and work quickly to reduce an infant's fever and pain. Infants' Tylenol is suitable for infants with aspirin allergies as well as safe for infants with chicken pox.
Considerations
-
The Associated Press reported that research conducted in the Czech Republic as of October 2009 suggested the use of Tylenol in infants might cause vaccinations to become less effective. Doctors from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this was the first major study of its kind linking the use of such medications to reduced immunity in children and infants.
