How to Moisturize a Baby's Scalp

A baby's skin is much more sensitive than that of an adult and requires more attention as well. Commercial shampoos and lotions can cause irritation and add to problems such as cradle cap or eczema. Using natural shampoos, oils and lotions can help restore moisture on the baby's sensitive scalp and prevent further irritation. Applying these natural oils, shampoos and lotions during bath time might help relieve any discomfort and keep your baby's scalp healthy.

Add baby oil to the water during bath time to help open pores and allow the scalp to breathe. Pour a teaspoon of baby oil into a large bath or a half-teaspoon for a smaller bath, and gently pour the oily water onto the baby's scalp. Slowly massage the scalp, and allow the oily water to sit for about five minutes, then gently wash it off with shampoo and clear lukewarm water. Select a baby oil that is natural and fragrance-free to prevent further irritation.

Use a gentle, odor-free, moisturizing baby shampoo that is free of dyes and sulfates. Shampoos that use natural ingredients such as chamomile and plant extract can help sooth dry scalp and moisturize it. Pour a half-teaspoon on your hands, and gently massage shampoo into your baby's scalp with your fingers. Rinse the shampoo off with clear lukewarm water, and gently pat hair with a soft towel to dry it.

Massage an odor- and dye-free baby lotion or scalp salve onto your baby's head. These lotions and salves are especially created for sensitive skin issues and provide the moisture needed to condition your baby's scalp. Lotions and salves free of perfumes and dyes also help prevent further irritation and skin infection from occurring. These lotions and salves can be left on baby's scalp overnight or until bath time because they will not irritate the baby's sensitive skin.

Apply an organic extra virgin olive oil to naturally moisturize the baby's scalp. Organic extra virgin olive oil is low in acid and can help hydrate dry baby skin. Pour a half-teaspoon of olive oil into your palm, and rub it together with both hands. Gently work the olive oil into your baby's scalp, and allow it to sit for an hour. Wash the olive oil away with shampoo and lukewarm water, then gently pat dry with a soft towel.
