Head-Shaking Infant Ear Infection
Ear infections are a common problem in infants and children under 3. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that most children will get or have had an ear infection before that age.-
Features
-
Ear infections in infants happen because their ear eustachian tubes are shorter and more horizontal than adult eustachian tubes, affording them less protection from microbial invaders.
Causes
-
Infant ear infections are often caused by bacteria or sometimes viruses. Typically fluid will build up in the ear, then become infected.
Head Shaking
-
Since infants are not able to tell you what hurts, they may shake their heads back and forth because of the pain or discomfort.
Other Symptoms
-
Other symptoms of ear infections can include fussiness, fever and a baby who is pulling on her ears. Anytime your baby is acting unusual or has a fever, it is a good idea to call the doctor.
Treatment
-
Antibiotics are the typical course of treatment for an infant ear infection. Your baby may also need to be rechecked after he has finished all of the medicine.
