Can You Do a DNA Test While Pregnant?

Determining the paternity of a baby is important in order to collect financial and emotional support, as well as providing an accurate medical history for the child and peace of mind for the expectant mother.
  1. Amniocentesis

    • DNA testing can be performed before the baby is born through a medical procedure called amniocentesis, in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn via a needle that is inserted into the mother's abdomen.

    Chorionic Villus Sampling

    • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal DNA test that requires a needle to be inserted into the vagina and through the cervix to obtain a sample of chorionic villi. These finger-like tissues are attached to the uterus and have the same genetic makeup as the fertilized egg.

    Time Frame

    • Amniocentesis is performed in the second trimester, typically between the 14th and 20th weeks. CVS may be conducted earlier, anywhere from the 10th to 13th weeks of pregnancy. Paternity results are generally available within 5 business days after the test has been completed.

    Cost

    • The cost of paternity testing is dependent upon they type of testing that will be conducted and the area of the country in which the testing will be completed, but may range from $400 to $2,000.

    Warning

    • There are serious risks associated with prenatal DNA procedures, including harm to the fetus and miscarriage. Cramping, vaginal bleeding or loss of amniotic fluid may occur as well.

    Laboratory Accreditation

    • The American Pregnancy Association recommends paternity testing be completed by a laboratory that has been accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks.
