Are Head Support Pillows Safe for Infants in the Car?

An infant's neck is very fragile in the first few months of life. While riding in the car, not only is it important that the infant be secured in a car seat but that the neck is supported properly as well.
  1. Breathing

    • Infants do not have strong neck muscles and without head support, their necks flop forward. This can close up breathing passageways, making it difficult for the infant to get air.

    Crash Protection

    • In the event of a car accident, if an infant does not have sufficient neck support, the force of the accident could cause major neck injuries or brain damage.

    Types

    • When choosing an infant head support pillow, only consider ones without heavy cushioning behind the head portion. This will only push the infant's head forward, causing stress on their breathing. Note that using any 3rd party head support will void the warranty of the car seat.

    Alternative

    • You can also create your own neck support by rolling up two receiving blankets and placing one on either side of the infant's body and head. Don't place anything behind the newborn's head or under her neck.

    Car Seat Angle

    • Car seats at the infant stage should be facing backward and leveled at a 45-degree angle. This will place the infant in a comfortable position and allow for adequate breathing.
