Use of Ultra Violet Light in the Treatment of Babies
Jaundice is a common condition in newborn babies. When red blood cells break down, they create a byproduct called bilirubin. The liver normally removes bilirubin from the blood, but a build-up of bilirubin can result in jaundice. Ultraviolet light therapy is the standard treatment for jaundice in babies.-
Symptoms of Jaundice
-
Most cases of jaundice are mild and will self-correct within two weeks. Jaundice gives a yellow cast to the skin and eyes. A severely jaundiced baby may also be listless, less alert and less interested in feeding.
Risks of Jaundice
-
If jaundice is severe and persistent, it can affect the brain and impair a baby's development. Treatment with ultraviolet light, also known as phototherapy, can correct the problem and protect the baby.
When to Use Ultraviolet Light
-
Doctors watch babies with jaundice closely. A blood test is usually done to measure bilirubin levels. If the levels are abnormally high, the doctor will recommend treatment with ultraviolet lights.
What Ultraviolet Light Does
-
Ultraviolet light absorbed through the baby's skin helps the body to break down bilirubin into products that are more easily eliminated. Ultraviolet light treatment usually corrects jaundice within one or two days.
Side Effects of Ultraviolet Light
-
Babies receiving therapy with ultraviolet lights sometimes become dehydrated. They may also have loose stools and more frequent bowel movements.
