Enfamil ProSobee Vs. Enfamil Gentlease for Gas

As a parent, it can be upsetting when your baby seems overly fussy or gassy after her formula feedings. These reactions can be caused by a sensitivity to the protein in milk-based formulas. Enfamil offers two infant formulas targeted at reducing fussiness and excess gas in infants on formula: ProSobee, a soy-based formula and Gentlease, a milk-based formula with reduced levels of lactose.
    • Mothers have a choice of formula for babies experiencing fussiness or gas.

    History

    • Manufactured infant formula is available for babies who are not breast fed or are partially breast fed. Congress and the Food and Drug Administration are involved in governing the contents and monitoring formula, respectively. Infant formula is available in three different categories: milk-based, which makes up about 80 percent of formula sold and is available with added iron, soy-based for babies unable to digest lactose and specialized for certain disorders and diseases. Enfamil has been providing infant formula since 1959, when it debuted formula patterned after breast milk. They continue to add formulas to meet the needs of infants requiring formula for their nutritional requirements.

    Enfamil ProSobee

    • Introduced in 1965, ProSobee is available for infants with feeding problems such as fussiness and gas caused by a sensitivity to milk-based formulas. ProSobee is a soy-based infant formula that is milk-, lactose- and sucrose-free and has been shown to solve common feeding problems better than other formulas, according to Enfamil.com. ProSobee contains DHA and an increased level of choline to support brain development and ARA for eye development.

    Enfamil Gentlease

    • Gentlease was added to Enfamil's formula line in 2005 for babies experiencing fussiness and gas. It is a milk-based formula patterned after breast milk that contains reduced levels of lactose and partially broken down, easy-to-digest proteins. In addition, Gentlease contains DHA and a level of choline similar to breast milk for brain development and ARA to support eye development.

    Types and Sizes

    • Infant formula is available in different types and sizes including powder, ready-to-use liquid and concentrated liquid. Powder and concentrated liquid formula need to be carefully mixed with water before use. ProSobee is sold in 12.9 oz. and 25.7 oz. powder cans, ready-to-use liquid 8 fl. oz. and 32 fl. oz. containers and 2 fl. oz. and 6 fl. oz. Nursette bottles and 13 fl. oz. concentrated liquid cans. Gentlease is available only in 12 oz. and 24 oz. powder cans.

    Price

    • As of 2009, according to Enfamil.com, ProSobee infant formula ranges in price from $41 to $162 depending on the size and type of ProSobee formula you purchase. Gentlease formula ranges from $87 to $108 based on the size as well. Enfamil sells ProSobee and Gentlease in cases through its website.

    Warning

    • If you think your baby is experiencing fussiness and/or gas, talk to your pediatrician about formula options available for your baby to ensure he is getting the proper nutritional level and formula for his age and specific situation.
