Stomach Problems in Infants

Stomach problems in infants are common. They range from mild to severe. If your infant seems sick or has blood in her stool, see your pediatrician. Your doctor can help diagnose and treat any stomach problems.
  1. Gas

    • Gas is caused when your infant swallows air. Your infant will be fussy, and his stomach will be hard. Gas relief drops can help.

    Diarrhea

    • It can be difficult to determine if your infant has diarrhea. Look for an increase in the number of dirty diapers along with an increase of water in the stool.

    Reflux

    • Gastroesophageal reflux occurs in babies when food backs up into esophagus after eating. Your infant will usually have poor weight gain, irritability after eating and sometimes frequent spit up.

    Milk Allergy

    • Commonly with milk allergy, blood will show up in your baby's stool, or eczema will appear on your baby's skin. You will need to switch formulas or eliminate milk products from your diet if you are breastfeeding.

    Vomiting

    • Vomiting in infants is usually caused by gastroenteritis, which is a stomach virus. Offer your infants small amounts of liquid. Watch for signs of dehydration, which include fewer wet diapers and crying without tears.
