Signs Baby Has Reflux

According to the Mayo Clinic, reflux affects more than half of all babies in the first three months of life. Infant reflux occurs when the immature muscle of the lower esophagus allows stomach contents to flow up into the esophagus and mouth.
  1. Spitting Up

    • Spitting up or vomiting is one of the most common signs of infant reflux and occurs most often after a feeding.

    Feeding Problems

    • Because reflux often occurs during or after eating, your baby may show signs of irritability or discomfort while feeding or immediately afterward or she may resist eating. Many infants arch their backs or necks due to discomfort while feeding.

    Waking

    • Babies with reflux may wake frequently because the reclined position allows stomach contents to flow into the esophagus.

    Crying

    • Reflux is often mistaken for colic because affected babies often display irritability and sudden or frequent crying.

    Hiccups

    • Many infants with reflux experience frequent hiccups or wet burps, especially after feeding.
