Yeast Infections in Babies

Yeast infections cause pain and irritation for babies and can sometimes be difficult to treat. Yeast infections generally occur in a baby's diaper area or her mouth. When a yeast infection occurs in a baby's mouth, it's called thrush.
  1. Cause

    • A fungus, Candida albicans, causes yeast infections. It grows in warm, moist, dark places.

    Predisposition

    • Antibiotics kill off the bacteria that normally limit the growth of yeast. If either the mom or the baby has taken antibiotics, it increases the risk for a yeast infection in the baby.

    Symptoms

    • Yeast infections in babies are most recognized by a diaper rash characterized by raised red bumps. Thrush appears as a white film in the baby's mouth.

    Treatment

    • Doctors can prescribe anti-fungal cream for a baby's bottom. For a breastfeeding baby, both the mother and baby need treatment.

    Prevention

    • Change wet diapers quickly. Wash your hands thoroughly after every diaper change. Breastfeeding moms should decrease the amount of sugar in their diets.
