What Is the Cure for RSV in Infants?
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is common viral infection that invades the respiratory tract and lungs. Oftentimes, children have mild cases or RSV that seem just like the common cold. However, RSV can pose serious risks to infants who were either premature or those who have other health issues. RSV usually causes a dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, breathing difficulties, fever and headache. RSV is treated according to the severity of the individual case.-
Pain and Fever Reducers
-
Mild cases of RSV may be treated with Motrin or Tylenol to alleviate fever and discomfort. However, these medications do not actually treat the cause of the infection.
Breathing Machines
-
Infants with more serious cases of RSV may be hooked up to a breathing machine to help with breathing.
Nebulized bronchodilator
-
Infants may also be treated with a nebulized bronchodilator to help with wheezing.
Epinephrine
-
Infants may also be given a shot or epinephrine to help reduce RSV symptoms.
Antibiotics
-
Antibiotics may used to treat any bacterial infections that accompany RSV. Antibiotics will not actually affect RSV, since it is viral in nature.
