How to Become a Sonographer Technician
Instructions
-
-
1
Finish high school or acquire a General Educational Developmental (GED) credential. Focus on courses in math, science and technology.
-
2
Research the colleges and universities in your country that offer sonography programs. The most common program is the two-year course leading to an associate degree, which is easiest to get and accepted by all hospitals. Earning a bachelor's degree in sonography, however, may increase your chances of being hired.
-
3
Choose a specialty in sonography. Your choices are ophthalmologic sonography, which deals with the eyes, abdominal sonography, which examines all the major organs of the body except the heart, and neurosonography, which deals with the nervous system. You may be able to earn a higher salary if you have a specialty.
-
4
Contact your state health department for any registration or licensing requirements. Some states require written tests, as well as technical operations exams. Complete the required steps for testing and licensing.
-
5
Become a member of an association connected with sonography and its specialties, such as the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. It is a nonprofit association for ultrasound professionals. This will make your professional resume look more attractive to employers.
