Symptoms of ADD in Infants

ADD or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurological dysfunction that affects about one in every 20 children. Although it is generally diagnosed in school-age kids, there are behaviors exhibited in infancy that can be early signs of the condition. These symptoms, along with a family history of ADHD, increase the likelihood that a child may have the disorder.
  1. Extremely Restless

    • Trouble getting your baby to sleep from time to time is not uncommon, but take note of habitually poor sleep patterns, inconsolable fits of crying and extreme restlessness at bedtime.

    Difficult to Feed

    • It may be a constant challenge to get your baby to sit still for feeding time. He may push food away, quickly lose interest in eating, become frustrated and try to get out of his seat.

    Frequent Tantrums

    • Due to the inability to communicate through speech, your infant may express herself through kicking, screaming and writhing around on the floor.

    Increased Anger

    • While all children are capable of becoming irritated, a child who is easily and intensely angered should be of serious concern.

    Rhythmic Actions

    • Banging a toy on the table over and over is typical of most babies, but be alarmed if your infant repetitively bangs her head or rocks her bed.
