Common Symptoms of Food Allergies in Infants
Most people are allergic to something at some point in their lives. Babies often have allergies to food, which they outgrow as they get older. However, though some symptoms of food allergies are simply bothersome, some are life-threatening, which is why it is important to pay close attention to any symptoms your infant may show after trying a new food.-
Skin Irritation
-
Itching and a rash such as hives or eczema tend to pop up quite often with infant food allergies.
Digestive Distress
-
Perhaps one of the most common symptoms of a food allergy in babies is digestive distress---nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain are often indicative of a food allergy.
Swelling
-
Swelling of body parts, particularly the chest, mouth and throat, are common in severe food allergies. Swelling should be taken seriously--it can be fatal if the airways are blocked.
Breathing Difficulties
-
Asthma, wheezing and other breathing troubles may erupt due to infant food allergies.
Warning
-
Food allergies can be life-threatening (anaphylactic reactions are rare but can be fatal), and a food allergen that was simply a nuisance one time may suddenly become much more serious the next time it is consumed. Be sure to keep your baby away from any foods that cause even mild problems until your pediatrician has checked her out and given you the green light.
