Symptoms of Gluten Allergies in Babies

Gluten allergies, or intolerances, are better known as Celiac disease, which is characterized by a sensitivity to the gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The immune system of a baby reacts to the gluten when the baby's small intestine becomes inflamed. This inflammation causes a whole host of physical symptoms and discomforts.
  1. Growth

    • A baby's growth may be severely hindered due to a gluten intolerance. This is because the internal wall of the intestine becomes damaged and is unable to absorb nutrients from food.

    GERD

    • A baby with a gluten intolerance may display the common symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), which include frequent vomiting after eating, and regular spitting up or crying after eating.

    Irritability

    • Irritability can be caused by factors such as an upset stomach or rashes that develop on the skin, particularly on babies' bottoms.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Gluten intolerance in babies may be prevented if they are breastfed for a period of at least four to six months. This is because of the antibodies found in the mother's breastmilk.

    Considerations

    • A gluten intolerance is not the same as a wheat allergy. Babies may outgrow an allergy, but a gluten intolerance is a lifelong condition that must be managed to maintain optimal health and development.
