Cold Treatments for Infants

The common cold is a viral illness that affects mainly the respiratory system. In infants, nasal congestion or a runny nose are two primary symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration recommends treating the symptoms naturally rather than plying babies with potentially harmful over-the-counter remedies. Because infants do not have a strong immune system, it is important to treat symptoms promptly before a more serious illness develops.
  1. Provide Fluids

    • Fluids prevent dehydration and also help thin mucus; breast milk is optimal but formula and bottled water is fine.

    Humid Air

    • Sitting with a baby inside a steamy bathroom can help alleviate congestion; a humidifier helps with both congestion and runny noses.

    Saline Nose Drops

    • Administering one drop of saline nose drops into an infant's nostrils two to three times a day can help break up thick mucus to provide clearer nasal passageways.

    Bulb Syringe

    • Babies cannot blow their nose to clear mucus but the suctioning power of a bulb syringe several times a day easily removes the mucus for better breathing.

    Elevate Crib

    • Inserting a pillow beneath one end of the crib mattress can lightly elevate the infant's head so mucus can flow freely out of the nose and promote easier breathing.
