How to Set Up an Infant’s Car Seat

Step 1: Gather the necessary materials.

* Infant car seat

* Car seat base

* Instruction manual for the car seat and base

* 2 locking clips (provided with car seat)

Step 2: Choose the proper location in your car for the infant car seat

* The car seat should be installed in the back seat of the car, in the center of the back seat if possible.

Step 3: Install the car seat base.

1. Place the car seat base in the desired location in your car.

2. Make sure the base is level by using the level indicator on the car seat base.

3. Use the seat belt to secure the base to the car.

4. Tighten the belt until the base is snug and doesn’t move.

5. Attach the locking clips provided with the car seat.

6. Check that the base is securely fastened to the car seat by shaking it from side to side. There should be no movement between the base and the seat.

Step 4: Install the infant car seat on the base.

1. Place the infant car seat on the car seat base.

2. Make sure the seat is aligned properly with the base and that it clicks into place.

3. Check to ensure the car seat is properly installed by wiggling it from side to side and front to back.

Step 5: Secure your child in the infant car seat.

1. Place your child in the infant car seat.

2. Buckle the harness straps securely and adjust the straps to fit snugly.

3. Ensure that the harness straps are not too tight, as this could restrict your child’s breathing.

4. Make sure the chest clip is at armpit level.

Step 6: Check the installation.

* Once you have installed the car seat and harnessed your child, give the car seat a good shake to make sure it is secure.

* There should be no more than 1 inch (2.54 cm) of movement from side to side or front to back.

* The car seat should not recline more than 45 degrees.

Step 7: Register the car seat with the manufacturer.

* It is recommended to register the infant car seat with the manufacturer for safety recall notifications.

* You can usually do this online or by mail.

Tips:

* Practice installing the car seat correctly, preferably before you bring your infant home for the first time from the hospital.

* Make sure everyone who will be driving your infant is trained in installing and properly securing the car seat.
