What causes jaundice in newborns?
Physiological jaundice is a temporary yellowing of a newborn's skin and whites of the eyes, beginning during the first 2 to 4 days of life. Physiological jaundice is caused by the normal breakdown of red blood cells as a baby's body adjusts to life outside the womb.
Other causes of jaundice (Pathological Jaundice):
1. Liver Problems: Liver disease or malformation
2. Pancreatic Problems: Blocked or damaged pancreas like in Biliary Atresia
3. Blood Disorders: Sickle cell anemia, Thalassemia
4. Genetic Conditions: Gilbert syndrome, Crigler-Najjar
5. Infections: Urinary tract infection (UTI), Hepatitis, Rubella
6. Drugs: Certain medications or herbal supplements
7. Inherited Disorders: Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD)
8. Sepsis: Severe infection in bloodstream
