How Do You Check if a Bottle Is BPA Free?

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical used to make plastic and resin. Because of its durability and other physical attributes, BPA is used to make a variety of products including CDs, DVDs, electronic equipment, cars and trucks, and reusable food and drink containers. In 2008, studies linked BPA with cancers and other health-related issues. Since then, health-conscious citizens have been looking for BPA-free alternatives to plastic cups and bottles.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your bottles over onto a flat surface so the bottom is facing up. If at the store, look at the back of the packaging, or on the bottom of the bottle.

    • 2

Locate the triangle formed with arrows to indicate the recycling symbol.

    • 3

Check for a number "7," "07" or "PC" inside the recycling symbol - this means the bottle contains BPA. Look for bottles without this symbol and codes, or opt for glass bottles, which do not contain BPA.

    • 4

Repeat steps 1-3 for other types of plastic bottles, from gallon jugs and water bottles to single-serve and reusable bottles.
