What is shaking baby syndrome?

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS), also known as abusive head trauma (AHT), is a serious brain injury that occurs when a baby or young child is shaken violently. This type of injury can cause permanent damage to the brain and lead to lifelong disabilities or even death.

Symptoms of SBS can include:

Irritability

Lethargy

Vomiting

Seizures

Bruising

Swelling

Retinal hemorrhaging

Bulging fontanelle (soft spot on the baby's head)

Shaking a baby can cause severe damage to their delicate brains. The violent shaking can cause the baby's head to snap back and forth, which can damage the blood vessels in the brain and cause bleeding. This bleeding can lead to brain damage and lifelong disabilities.

SBS is a preventable condition. Never shake a baby or young child, no matter how frustrated you may be. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break and put the baby in a safe place. You can also call a friend, family member, or hotline for support.
