How to Tell if Your Baby Is Underweight
Many parents wonder whether their child is at a healthy weight or gaining weight at an appropriate weight. Most newborns lose 5 to 10 percent of their birth weight within their first week of life but regain their birth weight within two weeks, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Newborns typically double their birth weight within three to four months. Although slow growth may indicate gastrointestinal issues, neurological problems or other health issues, many babies grow slowly without having health problems. It's best to see your doctor if you're concerned your baby is underweight, but you can also examine some signs that indicate whether your child is healthy.Instructions

1
Check whether your baby is gaining at least 1/2 oz. per day after she is four to five days old. Babies should also gain at least 1 lb. a month for the first four months.
-
2
Monitor your baby's diapers. After one week, most babies have three to four dirty diapers and five to six wet diapers daily.
-
3
Consider whether your baby seems alert while she is awake. Babies who wake on their own and are eager to eat are less likely to have a growth problem.
-
4
Determine whether your baby seems satiated and calm after eating. This suggests a healthy rate of growth.

5
Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Your doctor will be able to compare your baby's weight to growth charts and determine whether his growth has slowed.
