How to Find Out if a Child Is Eligible for a Free Dog to Help With Special Needs
Several organizations, including 4 Paws for Ability, Merlin's KIDS, and ARFkids offer service dogs for children with special needs. Service dogs offer love, companionship, and assistance with daily functions for children with mental and physical disabilities. Adoption of service dogs is often available at no charge to the recipient. Placement and training is supported through donations from individuals and corporations.Instructions

1
Complete an application to determine if your child is eligible for a service dog. Provide your name, child's name and age, address, and contact information. Clearly state the challenges and disabilities of the child in need. The organization will also require information on all members of the family, a description of the home, and whether or not there are any other pets in the home.

2
Participate in a personal interview. If you have met the preliminary qualifications of the organization, a personal visit will be arranged. A representative will meet with you and your family to further determine your eligibility and needs. Dogs are trained to meet the specific needs of the child and the family.

3
Await for the approval of your application. It may take a year or longer for the entire application process to be completed and a dog to become available for placement. Once your application is approved, the child and family will attend training sessions. Some organizations require the family to contribute a monetary donation. Organize fundraisers in support of your service dog to assist with this donation.
