How to Get Kids to Take Concerta

Concerta is a medication that is used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). The active ingredient in Concerta is methylphenidate, which helps some children to better manage their symptoms of ADHD, including hyperactivity and inattention. Concerta is administered as a once-daily pill that produces an extended release of its medicinal effect. Your child may have mixed feelings about taking Concerta or any medication. You can help your child approach this medication more positively with several strategies.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with your child about the medication and why he will be taking it.

    • 2

Answer any questions your child may have about the medication or ADHD.

    • 3

Create a routine in which your child takes the Concerta pill each morning. For instance, you might have your child take the pill with a glass of juice or water during breakfast. Consistency in administering the pill helps your child know what to expect.

    • 4

Allow your child to choose between two or three beverages with which to take the pill. This gives a sense of choice and control to your child in relation to taking medication.

    • 5

Demonstrate how to swallow a pill if your child has never done so before. Place a vitamin near the back of your tongue and take a big swallow of liquid to wash the pill down.

    • 6

Remind your child of the benefits of Concerta if she should object to taking the pill. Tie taking the medication to the positive effects that you and your child will see during the day.
