How to Make Crutch Pads for Children
It is bad enough when children have injuries or illnesses that require the use of crutches. The situation only gets worse when children are faced with the pressure and discomfort crutches cause under their arms. Crutch pads ease the pain and absorb armpit pressure, allowing a child to maintain better body positioning and reducing the risk of further injuring himself. You can make crutch pads for children cheaply and with a variety of items that you may already have around the house.Things You'll Need
- Ruler
- Brightly colored small pillows
- Duct tape
- Fringe decorative edging
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
Instructions

1
Measure the tops of the crutches, lengthwise, using a ruler or tape measure. This will give you an idea of how long your crutch pad needs to be.
-
2
Place small, brightly-colored or patterned pillows on top of crutches, based on your measurements. Make sure the pillows do not extend too far out on either side, because this can hinder a child's balance.
-
3
Wrap duct tape around the pillows, ensuring that they are securely in place. Failure to tightly tape down the pillows will result in slippage, causing the child discomfort and unsteadiness.
-
4
Decorate the pillow pads, after they are securely taped onto the crutches. Measure the perimeter of the pillow pads to determine how much decorative fringe you will need. Cut that length of fringe.
-
5
Make a line of fabric glue on the edges of your fringe. Attach the fringe around your pads, and apply firm pressure until adhered. Let the pillows dry completely before using.
