What Is a Lip Bumper?

A lip bumper is a removable orthodontic device, typically an arch wire connected to a piece of molded plastic. It is used to push the lower molar teeth back to create space for teeth in the front of the mouth.
  1. How it Works

    • A lip bumper extends from one lower molar to another, resting between the teeth and the cheek. It keeps the cheek and the lower lip away from the teeth, allowing the tongue to gently push on them.

    Purpose

    • These orthodontic devices are often used to resolve crowding of the lower teeth in younger children. Typically, they are worn for a period of between 12 and 18 months depending on the severity of crowding. They can help to avoid the need for extracting adult teeth, which can affect the profile of the face.

    Wear

    • Lip bumpers are comfortable to wear and are typically worn 24 hours a day, including while eating. Wearers should, however, avoid hard or sticky foodstuffs that can cause damage to a lip bumper.
