Why is Smoking Bad for Children?

Smoking negatively affects children in terms of cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems and increased infections.
  1. Cardiovascular Disease

    • Cardiovascular disease is not only prevalent in adults who smoke but it also directly affects children exposed to secondhand smoke. According to WebMD, children exposed to prolonged secondhand cigarette smoke are more likely to develop heart disease and many other health problems.

    Respiratory Problems

    • Children with asthma suffer from poor air restriction due to secondhand smoke. Moreover, according to CNN, secondhand smoke lowers immune response, resulting in increased respiratory tract infections and inflammation of respiratory tissue.

    Ear Infections

    • Children who are in direct contact with secondhand smoke are more likely to have an increase in ear infections. A study by the University of Calgary in Canada revealed that children who were exposed to secondhand smoke were 85 percent more likely to incur persistent middle ear infections.
