Home Remedy for Nits
According to the Mayo Clinic website, head lice and nits are a highly communicable condition passed between schoolchildren, second only to the common cold in numbers of cases found in schoolchildren.-
Home Remedies
-
The Mayo Clinic reports some drugs and treatments for head lice and their eggs, or nits, are made from harsh chemicals many parents do not wish to use on their children. Children's hair can be combed with a fine-toothed comb when the hair is wet to remove the majority of lice and nits.
Oil
-
The EMedTV website explains oil-based products, such as olive oil and mayonnaise, can be used to help remove nits and head lice from hair. White vinegar is also often used to loosen nits from hair, making it easier for nits to be removed from the head.
Heat
-
The Mayo Clinic explains nits require a constant temperature similar to that on the scalp of the head to survive. Items, such as clothing and bedding, should be washed at hot temperatures and dried on high heat for 20 minutes or more to kill any nits and lice attached to the items.
