Florida Medicaid for Children
Florida Medicaid provides no-cost medical care to low-income children. General requirements are that the child be under the age of 19, reside with an adult (who does not have to be a parent,) a resident of Florida, and a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen.-
Covered Groups
-
Any child meeting the general requirements whom also meets the income and asset limits can qualify for Medicaid in Florida.
Income Limits
-
Income limits are dependent upon the age of the child. Children up to 1 year old need to come from a family that has an income under 201 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL). Children ages 1 to 5 need to come from a family that has an income under 134 percent of the FPL. Children ages 6 through 18 need to come from a family that has an income under 101 percent of the FPL.
Income Rules
-
The incomes of the child and any biological parents he lives with are counted. Incomes of step-parents are not counted. If a child lives with an adult other than his biological parents, only his income is counted.
Asset Limits
-
There are no asset limits for this program, whether the child lives with her biological parents or not.
Other Options
-
If a child or his family does not meet the income limits for Florida Medicaid, the child may also be eligible for another Florida medical service program. Children ages 1 to 5 who come from a family that has an income over 133 percent, but under 200 percent, of the FPL may qualify for MediKids. Children age 6 through 18 who come from a family that has an income over 100 percent of the FPL, but under 200 percent, may qualify for Florida Healthy Kids. Any child with special health needs who does not qualify for Medicaid may qualify for Children's Medical Services Network.
