Oxybutynin in Children

Bed wetting occurs when a child accidentally wets his bed at night when he is sleeping. For some children who frequently wet the bed, a doctor will prescribe the medication oxybutynin to help control this embarrassing problem.
  1. Function

    • Oxybutynin decreases bladder tightening, irritation of bladder muscles, urine leakage and pain when urinating. It will lessen the urge to urinate and the occurrence of bed wetting in children.

    Forms

    • Oxybutynin comes in pills and syrups.

    Time Frame

    • The amount of time oxybutynin is taken will vary for each child. However, most children will take it two to three times daily for extended periods of time.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of oxybutynin include flushing of the face, dry mouth, constipation, changes in mood, blurred vision and a dry mouth.

    Considerations

    • It has not been determined yet if oxybutynin is safe in treating bed wetting in children under six years old. Therefore, it is only recommended for children ages six and up.
