The Health Risks of Temporary Tattoos for Children
While temporary tattoos are fun for children, some of the potential side effects can cause a lifetime of misery. Be sure to check the types of dye listed as ingredients used to make the temporary tattoos and be on the lookout for paraphenylenediamine (PPD). This chemical has been found to cause severe allergic reactions in children and adults.-
PPD
-
Also known as black henna, temporary tattoos containing at least 10 percent of the PPD chemical (used to create red or black dye for many of these tattoos) have been known to cause numerous skin conditions and scarring. Since children are the most common recipients of these tattoos, it's important to take note of what your child is using. These toxic novelties can be commonly found in places that are easily accessible to children including shopping malls, play centers and quarter machines in family restaurants.
Skin Conditions
-
Common skin irritations and conditions caused by black henna include eczema, swelling, blisters, rash and scars. Eczema is a painful skin issue that causes swelling, peeling and dryness of the skin. Once this condition is diagnosed, it is common to have regular outbreaks throughout a lifetime. Swelling and blisters can usually be addressed by visiting your doctor, but the after-effects can be serious. After exposure to these, cross-allergies can occur after coming into contact with other items that contain similar chemicals, like hair dye, sunscreen and printer ink.
Taking Action
-
It should be noted that not all temporary tattoos use this chemical. Many children have had no issues using these, but if you notice any change in your child's skin condition after application of a temporary tattoo, contact your family physician immediately. Treatments for these irritations typically involve topical creams or antibiotics, but once a child is exposed to this allergen, chances are he will have recurring issues throughout his life. Pay close attention to how your child is treating his skin and always be aware of what art he is applying to his body.
