Sinus Balloon Stent in Children

A sinus balloon procedure or balloon sinuplasty opens sinus passages to decrease the occurrence of sinus pain, congestion and infection. The procedure actually involves the use of a catheter and not a stent. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved sinuplasty procedures for both children and adults.

• Sinuplasty balloon procedures alleviate sinus blockages that cause headaches and infections by permanently widening narrowed sinus passages.

Procedure

• A balloon sinuplasty involves inserting a catheter into the nostrils to the blocked sinuses. Once the catheter delivers the balloon to the appropriate location, the physician inflates the balloon to open the sinuses and restore functional drainage. The catheter and balloon are then removed.

Benefits

• A balloon sinuplasty benefits children who have chronically blocked sinuses. The minimally invasive procedure may be performed safely on most children.

Recovery

• According to Corner Stone ENT, most children fully recover for a balloon sinuplasty within 48 hours of the procedure.

Considerations

• While sinuplasty has a good success rate, other medical treatments may still be needed after the procedure.
