How to Take Care of a Kid's Waist-Length Hair

Long hair looks beautiful on young children, but can require a lot of maintenance. It is important to teach kids how to care for their hair with good hygiene and regular brushings. For long, waist-length hair, kids may need additional help keeping their hair out of the way at school or during playtime. Use a regular routine to keep your child's hair healthy.

Instructions

Wash your child's long hair every day. Because the hair is so long, kids will need to learn how to wash hair in the shower. Squeeze a quarter size amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand or your child's hand. Scrub the shampoo first into the scalp, then throughout the length of the hair. After hair is sudsy, rinse it under warm, not hot water.

Wring out water from the hair by squeezing it. Squirt a quarter-size amount of the conditioner into the palm of your hand, or your child's hand. Rub in the conditioner starting at the roots and working it upwards. Leave the conditioner in the hair ends for a minute, then rinse it with warm water. Squeeze the water from the hair.

Towel dry the hair by gently squeezing the water from it. Use the wide-toothed comb and carefully remove snags and tangles. If your child is tender headed, hold the hair at the scalp with one hand and comb small sections with the other. Do this until all the hair is free of tangles.

Use a blow dryer to dry the hair underneath. If your child is going to bed, dry the hair entirely. Hair can sour if it is slept on while wet. Brush the hair again with the wide-tooth comb to keep removing tangles.

Tie the hair back, or make a loose braid, starting at the back of the head and working downwards. Use a hair scrunchie to secure the braid in place.
