First Aid for an Ear Infection

An ear infection involves the inflammation of the middle ear, which is found behind the eardrum. Symptoms of an ear infection include pain, fever, hearing loss, vomiting and diarrhea. Some ear infections require antibiotics, but many can be treated at home with first aid strategies.
  1. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

    • Take over-the-counter painkillers to reduce pain and lower fever. Children should not take aspirin because of the risk of developing Reye's syndrome.

    Warm Compress

    • Using a warm compress on the ear can help relieve pain.

    Distractions

    • Low-key activities like board games, reading books aloud or watching movies can help distract children from the discomfort of an ear infection.

    Ear Drops

    • Over-the-counter or prescription ear drops can help relieve discomfort associated with ear infections.

    Antibiotics and Surgery

    • Doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics for ear infections, although many ear infections are viral and cannot be treated with antibiotics. Minor surgery may help children who have persistent or recurring ear infections.

    Warning

    • Seek immediate medical care if your child has severe pain, high fever, severe headache, swelling, dizziness, or severe pain that suddenly stops.
