Adolescent Abdominal Pain
Abdominal pain is a common complaint during the adolescent years. In most cases, it is temporary and does not indicate a serious problem. Sometimes, however, it can indicate critical conditions such as appendicitis.-
Significance
-
Abdominal pain signals that something is irritating the digestive system. This irritation may be the result of an illness or a reaction to a food item. Abdominal pain also can occur as a result of constipation.
Types
-
Stomach pain is usually not serious; however, severe lower-right abdominal pain along with fever and vomiting may indicate appendicitis. Severe middle abdominal pain along with the vomiting of green liquid may indicate an intestinal obstruction, which is a life-threatening condition.
Time Frame
-
Most causes of stomach pain improve within one or two days. An adolescent who has stomach pain that persists longer should be evaluated by a physician.
Considerations
-
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, other possible causes of abdominal pain in adolescents may include urinary tract infections, pneumonia, irritable bowel syndrome, emotional stress and trauma.
Treatment
-
Treatments for abdominal pain vary depending on the cause. If the cause is undetermined, encourage the child to take a warm bath and to rest. If symptoms are severe, consult a physician.
