Signs and Symptoms of IBS in Children

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder. According to a 1996 study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, 6 percent of middle school students and 14 percent of high-school-age students reported experiencing symptoms of IBS.
  1. Symptoms

    • The symptoms of IBS can interfere with a child's daily activities. These symptoms range from stomach cramps, diarrhea and constipation, to gas and bloating.

    Causes

    • The causes of IBS are unknown. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, adverse reactions to specific foods, stress, the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the colon, and abnormalities in how stool travels through the digestive tract all contribute to IBS.

    School

    • Children with IBS may find it difficult to attend school while coping with its symptoms. The National Digestive Diseases Clearinghouse suggests speaking with your child's school administrator to arrange extra bathroom breaks or a private bathroom for her.

    Treatment

    • IBS treatment for children includes reducing stress and taking medication that treats the symptoms of IBS. Eating a high-fiber diet and taking laxatives for constipation or diarrhea medicine also can help.

    Considerations

    • A good therapist can help the child cope with stress and make behavioral changes that will improve his ability to deal with the symptoms of IBS.
