Types of Rashes in Children

Most children develop rashes on their bodies at some time in their lives. It is important to know what may be causing the rash in order to help determine how to best treat it.
  1. Plant Rashes

    • Plant rashes are caused by the skin contacting a poisonous plant, which releases chemicals on the skin. The rash looks like a red, inflamed, spotted area of the skin. Treatment involves applying an anti-itching lotion and avoiding the plant in question.

    Viral Rashes

    • Viral rashes are cause by certain viral infections, such as chicken pox or measles. The rash looks like puss-filled, crusty bumps all over the body. Treatment involves drinking plenty of fluids and getting enough rest. Avoid contact with others until the rash is completely gone.

    Allergic Rashes

    • An allergic rash can appear on the skin as the result of eating an allergenic food or touching a substance that irritates the skin. The rash looks like raised, fluid-filled spots on the trunk and face. Treatment involves avoiding the allergen.

    Stress Rashes

    • Stress rashes can resemble an allergic rash, and appears as raised, fluid-filled bumps all over the body. Reducing stress will reduce the rash.

    Auto-Immune Rash

    • Auto-immune rashes are caused by diseases such as psoriasis. The rash appears crusty, and produces bumps covered in silvery scales. Treatment involves applying a steroidal cortisone cream.
