Migraines in Male Children

A migraine is a headache that usually causes head pain on one side. According to eMedicine Health, migraines occur more often in male children younger than the age of 10. Migraines begin to occur around the age of 5 in most children.
  1. Effects

    • In addition to having pain on just one side of the head, male children will be sensitive to lights and sounds, experience fatigue and have soreness in their neck.

    Causes

    • Migraines are caused by a variety of things, including family history, trauma, food allergies and aversions to certain lights or odors.

    Identification

    • To find out what is causing migraines in a male child, a doctor will take a family history and gather information about what events have led up to the migraines. They will order a CT scan and MRI to rule out causes related to trauma.

    Treatment

    • To lessen the severity of the pain from a migraine, a doctor will prescribe pain medications.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Male children can prevent migraines by avoiding dietary and environmental triggers. When they feel a migraine coming on, finding a calm place and relaxing will help prevent the migraine or lessen the severity of it.
