Herbal Allergy Relief for Children

A variety of herbal and natural remedies can relieve allergies by decreasing symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and difficulty breathing. However, not all of these remedies are safe for children. The herbal allergy remedies for children outlined below are all safe when properly prepared and used, but please consult your pediatrician before using any allergy relief method.
  1. Teas

    • Warm teas are an excellent way to provide herbal allergy relief, and just a bit of honey added to any tea will help it go down better with children and provide some relief to scratchy throats. Some of the best allergy relief herbs to use in teas are: common stinging nettles, licorice, peppermint, ginger root and mullein.

All of these herbs act as anti-inflammatory agents and will help clear bronchial passages, decongest nasal passages and reduce allergy symptoms.

    Steam

    • Sometimes it is beneficial to clear airways of mucus directly by using steam inhalation. Adding herbs to the steam mixture can greatly increase its benefits. Eucalyptus and thyme have decongestant effects and a pleasant aroma that will make kids more willing to try this method.

    Prevention

    • Sometimes the best way to relieve allergies is to boost the immune system so that any symptoms are naturally lessened. The best herbs for supporting immune system health are: echinacea, hyssop, lemon balm, lemongrass and lemon thyme. All of these herbs can be made into teas or taken in pill form as supplements.
