Lice Eggs in Hair Treatment

Head lice are tiny, six-legged insects that infest human heads and feed on blood. They are easily transmitted to other heads. Treatments include over-the-counter products, prescription-strength treatments and homemade remedies.
  1. Pesticides

    • Several well-known lice treatments, such as Rid and Nix, contain pesticides that specifically kill lice. However, most of these do not kill the eggs (also called nits).

    Lice Combs

    • Most OTC treatments come with nit combs. The process of nit removal is essential, whether or not the combs are used. They can also be removed by cutting out the strands of hair that have the actual nit attached.

    Pesticide-Free

    • LiceFree and LiceMD are two OTC treatments that claim to be pesticide-free, and both claim to kill nits.

    Natural Treatments

    • Tea Tree Oil is a natural product that lice are reportedly repelled by. Add it to unscented oil and leave it on the hair for a minimum of two hours, and then rinse. Nits will still need to be removed manually.

    Home-made treatments

    • Mayonnaise, olive oil and vinegar are believed to work well against lice because they suffocate them. They do not kill nits. Keep these treatments on the hair for a minimum of two hours.
