Signs & Symptoms of Anemia in Children

Anemia is a condition that affects the blood. It occurs when you don't have enough red blood cells or there is not enough hemoglobin in the blood. Anemia can cause several noticeable symptoms.
  1. Types

    • Symptoms of anemia in children can include pale skin, jaundice, sore or swollen tongue, delayed development, dizziness, headache, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, irregular periods, irritability and lack of energy. Decreased appetite may also be a sign of anemia in your child.

    Significance

    • If you suspect that your child is anemic, it is important for him to see a doctor, because there are several undetectable symptoms that can be serious, including an enlarged spleen or liver, pale mucous membranes and heart murmurs.

    Causes

    • Some conditions that can cause anemia include infection, disease, medication and poor nutrition. The type of treatment will depend upon the cause of the anemia.

    Treatment

    • Anemia treatments can include vitamins, dietary changes, removal of the spleen, blood transfusions, antibiotics and bone marrow transplant.

    Considerations

    • Anemia is typically a symptom of another condition, which is another reason it's important for your child to see a doctor as soon as you notice any symptoms.
