How to Remove a Bead From a Child's Nose

It's a common occurrence: your child suddenly begins having difficulty breathing through his nose, or she may act as though something is stuck, complaining about pain in the nose. Children often insert beads and other small objects into their noses, but that doesn't always require a trip to the doctor's office. A simple at-home trick can often remove the offending object without the use of special equipment.

Instructions

If your child is old enough to explain, ask him what he placed in her nose, and what side of the nose he inserted the object into. If the child cannot explain, use your fingers to gently touch the side of the nose, feeling for the foreign body. Or listen to his breathing; is there one side of the nose that sounds stuffy or is blocked? If the foreign object has been lodged in the nose for some time, there might be a discharge coming from that nostril.

Have your child breath through his mouth, to avoid lodging the bead farther up his nostril. Seat himcomfortably in an upright position.

    • 3

Press the non-affected nostril closed and have your child blow his nose into a tissue, gently. The object should come loose with the pressure from the nose blowing.

If the foreign object does not exit the nasal cavity after attempting this method, you will need to see a medical professional.
