Back Pain in Children

Back pain in children is not as common as it is for adults, and even less common in prepubescent children. Most likely, if a child is showing signs of chronic back pain, there is some underlying disorder.
  1. Cause

    • The most common cause for back pain in children is muscle strain caused by a sports injury or fall.

    Other Causes

    • Spondylolysis, which affects 5 percent of children, is a defect in the lower vertebra.
Less common causes are disk herniation, diskitis, pyelonephritis, Sheurman's kyphosis and spondylolisthesis. Other causes, although rare, are tumors, trauma, arthritis and infections.

    Warning Signs

    • If a child experiences symptoms such as fever, numbness, trouble walking, or bladder or bowel problems, a doctor should be consulted.

    Treatment

    • A children's anti-inflammatory medicine, along with rest and ice, should be enough to treat the pain for muscle strain. If there is no improvement after a few days, it is time for a visit to the doctor. The doctor will start with a verbal history and ask about the child's recent physical activities. He may take x-rays if needed.

    Prevention

    • Carrying a heavy backpack can be a cause for back problems in children. Be sure they do not carry more than 15 percent of their own weight. Also, be sure to have both straps on because carrying heavy objects on one side can cause an imbalance in the back muscles. Getting plenty of exercise will help children strengthen their back muscles as well as the other major muscle groups that help in supporting the back.
