Fluclomix is a brand name for flucloxacillin, a type of penicillin antibiotic. It is available in injectable form, capsules and oral solution in dosages of 250 mg, 500 mg and 1 g. Children usually are prescribed half or less of the adult dose as determined by weight. Most side effects of Fluclomix are the same for children as for adults.-
Function
-
Fluclomix works by killing bacteria that cause infections. It is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, throat, skin, blood, bones and joints.
Uncommon Side Effects
-
Side effects associated with Fluclomix use are uncommon and may include upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, aching joints and headache.
Rare Serious Effects
-
Some rare side effects call for immediate medical attention. These include severe diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, persistent fatigue or headaches, dizziness, pale skin, becoming short of breath when exercising, and bleeding or bruising easily.
Allergic Reaction
-
Although unlikely, some children have an allergic reaction to Fluclomix. Signs are rash or hives, itching, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body.
Liver Reactions
-
Liver reactions such as hepatitis may occur, even several weeks after treatment. Symptoms include jaundice and dark urine.
Neutropenia
-
A study published in the January/February 2005 issue of the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health found that eight children developed a decrease in white blood cells (neutropenia) attributed to treatment with flucloxacillin. Blood counts returned to normal in all patients, but the researchers advised using flucloxacillin with greater caution.
