Dry Nose in Children

There are many reasons for a dry nose in a child. Most cases are easily managed or even preventable, but a few require further investigation.
  1. The Weather

    • The most common cause of a dry nose is the weather. If its hot out, with little or no humidity, dry nose is a common symptom. Excessive wind can cause dry nose, as can air conditioners and heaters, what we turn on and use in response to the weather. Children are especially sensitive to fluctuations in temperature when moving from outdoors to indoors and more likely than adults to suffer a dry nose.

    Medications

    • Dry nose in children can also be a result of medications. The most common trigger of dry nose is anti-histamines. Also, nose sprays can cause dry nose, though it seems counter intuitive. If the child has asthma, many inhalers and asthma treatments cause dry nose. One ingredient to look out for: atropine. If you see atropine in any of your children's medications, tell your pediatrician of the dry nose issue and switch to a product without this ingredient.

    Illness

    • Sometimes a dry nose is a smptom of illness. A dry nose can be symptomatic of the flu, allergies, and the common cold. More rarely it can be a sign of a sinus or throat infection.

    Not Alone

    • A dry nose is usually not a stand-alone symptom. A dry nose can trigger dry eyes and a dry sore throat. The most common effect of a dry nose in children is the nosebleed, so be prepared. Another side effect can be difficulty breathing and discomfort eating.

    Natural Remedies

    • The easiest natural remedy is hydration. Have the child drink lots of fluids. Keep the fluids caffeine free and low in sugar--water is usually best. Another thing that helps is a humidifier. Adding moisture to the air can go a long way in relieving dry nasal passages. If you do not have a humidifier, sit in the shower with the little one for about 15 minutes, letting the room fill up with steam. Vasoline is the grandmother remedy as well as olive oil placed within the nostrils. A little diligent care and most dry nose is quickly cured.
