Mayonnaise Treatment for Lice

Head lice is highly contagious, which is why it quickly spreads through a school. A pediatrician can prescribe Ovide, but this drug is a pesticide that can cause seizures. Over-the-counter head lice treatment also works, but that is also a pesticide. Mayonnaise is one of the most popular home remedies. It smothers the lice and makes the hair slippery so you can easily remove the lice and their eggs.
  1. Application

    • Completely cover the infected person's hair with mayonnaise. Be liberal with the mayonnaise and make sure that the hair is saturated from the roots to the tips. Wrap plastic wrap around the person's head and hair. Make sure it is tight and then wrap a towel around the plastic wrap. Set a timer for 2 hours.

    Washing the Hair

    • Remove the towel and place it in a washing machine. It will need to be washed in hot water to kill any lice on it. Remove the plastic wrap and throw it away. Wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner to remove the mayonnaise. The hair may still be greasy. Pour apple cider vinegar over the hair and then rinse the hair out again. You will then be ready to remove any nits left in the hair.

    Removing the Nits

    • Purchase a fine tooth comb or a comb specifically for removing nits from hair. Separate the hair into sections and work one section at a time. Place the lice comb against the scalp and work it out to the tips. Wipe the nit comb off after each use on a tissue or paper towel. When you finish one section, go on to the next. This can take between 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on how much hair there is to go through. Repeat the combing again the next morning.
