Home Remedies for Stuffy Nose on Infants
Nasal congestion is a common problem for infants that is usually not caused by an infection. Though not a serious problem, a stuffy nose can be troubling for parents and can prevent your baby from eating or sleeping well. Try these home remedies to help your little one breathe easier.-
Saline nasal drops
-
Saline nasal drops are a simple way to break up nasal congestion. You can purchase these at your local pharmacy or you can make your own. To make your own saline nasal drops, simply mix 1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 1 cup of warm water. Using a medicine dropper or bulb syringe, place one drop in each nostril. Gently suction until clear. You may repeat this process, but only use one drop at a time to prevent choking. Be gentle during this process.
Keep it cool
-
Dry air is very aggravating to an infant's nasal passages. During the winter months it is a good idea not to keep your home too hot. Seventy degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect temperature to keep your baby warm without drying out his nasal passages.
Use a humidifier
-
A humidifier is a simple way to help your baby breathe easier by moistening his nasal passages and loosening mucus. Be sure to keep your humidifier clean and always change the filter on a regular basis. Failing to maintain your humidifier could worsen your baby's congestion and lead to further problems.
Let your infant sleep in an inclined position
-
Letting your baby sleep in an inclined position helps promote nasal drainage. This makes it easier for your baby to breathe through his nose. You can do this by putting something under one end of his crib. Do not place anything directly under your baby to prop him up. Anything added to your baby's crib increases his risk of SIDS.
Never smoke around your baby
-
Cigarette smoke is irritating to an infant's nasal passages. This increases swelling and leads to a stuffy nose. Secondhand smoke is also dangerous to infants in other ways. Never smoke around your baby. If you do smoke, wash your hands and change clothes before holding your baby.
