Counseling Techniques for Obesity in Children
-
Group Counseling
-
One technique that has helped children suffering from obesity is carefully constructed group counseling. A study by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002 concluded that overweight children suffer from low self-esteem, social prejudice, depression disorders and a poor body image. These conditions most likely come from bullying, teasing and a cyclical effect that such conditions have on academics and other achievements. Experts suggest that a thoughtfully composed group of overweight students who meet regularly to talk about their problems and feelings can help overcome some of the aforementioned afflictions. Group leaders can spread awareness of body image and demonstrate methods of handling teasing and bullying to build self esteem and positive outlook.
Nutrition Guidance
-
Another successful tactic for counseling obese children is sufficient education in nutrition and diet. Counselors should instruct the child on how to maintain a 1,500 calorie diet. Encouraging high energy, low-fat foods like fruits and vegetables and discouraging high sugar and high fat foods, helps children make better choices on their own. Educating them on the effects of poor diet on their health gives them the power they need to maintain wellness.
Exercise Implementation
-
Exercise is another important educational technique in fighting obesity. Children need to be made aware of the poor effects a sedentary lifestyle has on their body. They should be instructed on how to achieve a daily level of aerobic activity to increase their metabolism and increase their energy level. Learning to measure their resting and active heart-rates, and lessons in muscle composition and hydration all can aid a child in overcoming a weight problem.
