Foods to Relieve Constipation in Children
Constipation is typically caused by poor nutrition or a change in diet. It is defined by having a bowel movement less than three times a week. Its symptoms are painful, infrequent, hard or difficult to pass stools. Most types of constipation are temporary and treatable with simple dietary changes.-
Treating Constipation
-
Constipation in children usually relieves itself quickly, but you can take to facilitate this process. Start by increasing your child's daily fluid intake. Add fruits and vegetables to your child's daily diet---fiber is a natural stool softener. Popcorn also contains a large amount of fiber. Whole wheat bread, graham crackers and shredded wheat are full of bran, which also helps. Other foods that help relieve constipation are beans, rice, oats and rye. Nuts and seeds are equally effective, but only when consumed in moderation.
Constipation Triggers
-
Certain foods are known to trigger the symptoms of constipation, including dairy products like cow's milk, yogurt and cheese. Decrease your child's milk intake and monitor for any improvement in bowel movements. Other foods like sodas, hamburgers, pizza, deep fried and fast foods should be consumed in moderation.
Other Factors
-
Consult with a physician if your child is experiencing the following symptoms in addition to constipation; abdominal pain, blood in stool, loss of appetite, fever, nausea and vomiting
