Constipation Relief for a Child

Constipation is not a fun condition for adults but when your child is having trouble passing stool, it is something to deal with quickly but with restraint. Children are more susceptible to electrolyte imbalances and need to excrete toxins. In relieving the constipation, you don't want to send you child in the opposite spectrum of electrolyte imbalance. When in doubt, consult your pediatrician.
  1. Warm Bath

    • If your child is constipated, place her in a warm bath first. Add to the bath 2 oz. of baking soda and let your child sit in it for 10 to 15 minutes. The warm water with the baking soda may be enough to relax the rectal muscles that hold the stool. Often, children will get the urge to "poop" when in the bath and be relieved of the painful cramps from constipation.

    Stool Softener

    • A stool softener can be used according to doctor's or label instructions. Mild laxatives such as milk of magnesia will loosen the stool. This makes it easier to pass through the anus. Mineral oil is another way to soften the stool. Never use any laxative or mineral oil for more than two weeks without consulting your pediatrician. Never give your child adult laxatives or use an enema without first consulting your pediatrician. This can lead to major electrolyte imbalances and possibly send your child in to a more serious emergency condition.

    Diet

    • Give your child fresh fruits and vegetables to eat to help aid in constipation. Grapes and apples are great fruits to feed your child. You may also give him cereals like Cheerios to add bulk to the stool. Be sure your child is drinking lots of water to remain hydrated and aid in the releasing of the stool.

    Suppositories

    • If none of the other methods work, try a glycerin suppository. This will be difficult to convince most children to do and can be uncomfortable, but it may do the trick. This should only be used in children 6 months of age or older and never used more than twice before seeking pediatric advice.
