Medication for Tonsillitis
The tonsils are a pair of glands that are located at the top of the back of the throat. Either a viral infection or a bacterial infection can cause the tonsils to swell and become extremely tender, which can make swallowing painful and difficult. This condition, which is common during childhood, is known as tonsillitis. It can be treated by several types of prescription and over-the-counter medications.-
Penicillin
-
Penicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic medication given for tonsillitis. It is only effective for bacterial infections and is usually given for 10 to 14 days.
Erythromycin
-
For patients who have an allergy to penicillin, erythromycin is an alternative antibiotic that may be prescribed. It is also effective only for bacterial infections and is typically prescribed for 10 to 14 days.
Ibuprofen
-
Ibuprofen (such as Advil) is an over-the-counter medication that acts as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, which may somewhat reduce the tenderness and swelling. It should be taken as indicated on the package.
Acetaminophen
-
Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) is another over-the-counter medication that a tonsillitis sufferer can take to reduce pain. It also should be taken as indicated by the package directions.
Surgery
-
In the event that home treatments and prescription medication for tonsillitis prove ineffective, the tonsils may be surgically removed as a final option.
